Obituary
KENNETH W. FOLSOM DEXTER & WINDHAM, NH - Kenneth W. Folsom, 90, a longtime resident of Dexter, husband of the late Reba (Libby) Folsom, who died November 15, 1993, died February 9, 2001 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua, NH. They celebrated 61 years of marriage. He was born September 10, 1910 at Cambridge, the son of James Bert and Florence Gusta (Downing) Folsom. He is listed in Vol. II, p. 757 of the "Genealogy of the Folsom Family". As a young man he was struck by lightening while working in his father's workshop but suffered no lasting effects. He graduated from Harmony High School, Class of 1929 and attended Husson College in Bangor. He was a dairy farmer and carpenter living in Cambridge while raising his family. His home was consumed by a chimney fire in 1940 and another building on the property was moved to the original site. He was severely injured when staging gave way while barn raising on his father's property. He was treasurer of Harmony Development Corporation and was a volunteer fire fighter for Cambridge and Harmony. Ken was a member of the Cambridge Grange for many years and was a 60-year member of the Cambridge Masonic Lodge. In 1963 he sold the dairy farm and moved to Dexter where he worked as a fireman and handyman for Dexter Shoe Conpany. After retiring from Bud's Shop and Save he was asked to be handyman for the Dexter Boarding Home and did so for a time. He was an avid reader and enjoyed many authors including Zane Grey, John Jakes, Don Colesmith, historical novels and non-fiction. He enjoyed local history and was always ready to share his knowledge. He followed the local basketball games with enthusiasm and enjoyed the town and county fairs. He didn't care to travel great distances but enjoyed going to Greenville in the fall when the seaplanes came in. He loved the Maine coastline and watching the large ships come in to port. He realized his dream enjoying a week aboard Mr. Salisbury's sailboat visiting islands Down East. He shared his craft of woodworking with many neighbors and was very helpful to those in need. He enjoyed time spent at the camp in Hartland and the changing of the colors in the fall. He was an out-of-doors person and spent much time there. He is survived by one son, Waynard and wife Joyce Folsom of Dexter and Pinellas Park, FL; a daughter, Florence and her husband Paul Gosbee of Windham, NH where he made his home since his stroke in the summer of 2000; 2 brothers, Herbert James Folsom Downing, adopted by his uncle, Herbert Downing of Dexter; Robert and his wife Beverly Folsom of Harmony; 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great, great-granddaughters, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Reba Libby, brothers Thiron (infant), Marshall, and Harlan; also one grandson, Kenneth Folsom. He will also be remembered by many dear friends. There will be no visiting hours or funeral at this time. A spring graveside committal service will be held at Cambridge Memorial Garden, date to be announced later. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 346, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.
