Obituary
ISAAC COPELAND 1781-1863 Isaac Copeland was the oldest of the three children of Capt. Samuel and Lucy (Proctor) Copeland. He was born in Washington, New Hampshire, May 11, 1781, and died in Dexter, Maine, December 24, 1863. During the years 1803, 1804 and 1805 Captain Samuel Copeland, Simeon and John Morgan and Hugh Maxwell moved from Washington, N. H. to Dexter, Maine. Captain Copeland was twice married and his second wife, Emma Parker, bore him ten children, most of whom were born in Washington. His older children were pretty well grown when the family settled in Dexter. In 1816 Capt. Samuel and five of his sons signed the petition for the incorporation of the township to be known as Dexter. The sons were Raymond, Samuel, Jr., Parker, Luther and Calvin. Most of the children of Capt. Copeland married and settled in Dexter or towns nearby. Isaac Copeland married Hannah Bartlett and they lived in Garland, Dexter and Corinna. Most of his life was spent on the farm just over the line in Garland, long known as the Stephen Jennings place. Isaac Copeland held offices of honor and trust in Garland, and his name is found on the first voting list on record in that town.
