Obituary
Thomas A. Smart Thomas A. Smart, 56, prominent in local business and social circles died at his home on Main street Sunday morning following an illness of several months. He was born in Dexter, June 27, 1883, the son of George A. and Ethel Brann Smart. Graduating from Dexter High school in 1902, he entered Colby college, and upon completing his course, returned to Dexter where he became associated with H. E. Hale, clothier, remaining with Mr. Hale until the time of his death. He was a member of Penobscot lodge, F. and A. M., Royal Arch chapter, the Dexter club, Wassookeag chapter, No. 44, 0. E. S. and the DKE fraternity. He served several terms on the school board, and was the first president of the Dexter Parent Teachers association. For several years he was a valued member of the board of trustees and treasurer of Abbott Memorial library, an office which he was holding at his decease. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Cowie Smart; two daughters, Miss Jean Smart of Bangor and Miss Marion Smart of Boston; one brother, Raleigh Smart of Dexter; four sisters Mrs. Grace Packard, Yonkers, N. Y.; Mrs. Frederick Granger, Boothbay Harbor; Miss Marion Smart, Norwood and Mrs. A. R. Paige of this town, also five nephews. Funeral services were held from the First Universalist church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Kenneth R. Hutchinson officiating. Honorary bearers were, H. A. Blake D. W. Rollins, N. C. Bucknarn, H. E. Hale, C. S. Brewster, and H. M. Gates. Carleton Bucknam, Frederick Hale, George Vigue, Donald Champeon, Rufus Tillson and Dr. L. E. Kelley served as active bearers. An unusual profusion of beautiful flowers was a silent tribute of the esteem in which he was held by a host of friends Burial will be in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Attending the services from out of town were, Miss Jean Smart, Bangor; Miss Marion Smart, Boston,; Mrs. Grace Packard, Yonkers, N. Y.; Miss Marion Smart, Norwood, Mass.; Mrs. Frederick Granger, Boothbay Harbor; Edward Cowie, Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reynolds, South Freeport; Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Dillon and Oveid Packard, Milo; Miss Frances Arnold, Orono; Mrs. Luetta Thomas, Elmer Parsons, Monmouth; Edward Clifford, Garland; Mrs. Mabel Hussey, Miss Mildred Maguire, Miss Ruth Perry and John Sawyer, Bangor.
