Obituary	C. O. SHAW DIES IN HUNTSVILLE, ONT. There passed away in Huntsville, Ontario, on December 3rd, one of our native sons in the person of Mr. Charles Orlando Shaw. Mr. Shaw was born in Dexter on November 9th, 1859, the son of Charles Shaw and Elizabeth G. Roberts. For generations the Shaw family have been engaged in the leather making business. Mr. Shaw was educated in Dexter and Boston. On October 26th 1886, he married Jennie L. Abbott, also of Dexter, the daughter of George Amos Abbott and Lavina Eldridge. At that time Mrs. Shaw was well known throughout the state of Maine as an accomplished musician. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw then took up residence in Boston. During the winter of 1890 the family moved to Cheboygan, Mich., where Mr. Shaw was again actively engaged in the tanning business. In the fall of 1898 they moved to Huntsville, Ontario where Mr. Shaw took over the operation of the Shaw-Cassils Cornpany and which he built up to the present Anglo-Canadian Leather Company, the largest makers of sole leather in the British Empire. About 1910 Mr. Shaw conceived the idea of building a tourist hotel and after building delays due to the first world war, he opened Bigwin Inn in 1920 and for the past ten years of Mr. Shaw's life he devoted most of his time to the running of this resort. Thousands of Americans throughout our country have visited Bigwin Inn and have met and hold Mr. Shaw in very high esteem. Mr. Shaw was a great lover of music and, at great expense to himself, he personally organized the Anglo-Canadian Concert Band, bringing outstanding musicians to Huntsville as players, and as teachers of his employees. This band, well known for many years, was for some time under the direction of Herbert L. Carke,, and Mr. Shaw himself played first cornet. Another of his interests was the operation for many years of the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Navigation Company, which has done so much to open up the beautiful Muskoka country to cottagers and tourists. He was president of this company and of the Anglo Canadian Leather Company and of Bigwin Inn at the time of his death. Mrs. Shaw predeceased him in 1929, and in 1931 Mr. Shaw married Amanda Paully, who survives. Also surviving are his three children by his first marriage, Charles G. Shaw of Omemee, Ontario, Mrs. R. J. Gill (Pauline) of Brockville, Ontario, and Mrs. C. W. Conway (Jennie) of Huntsville, Ontario. There are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
