FORMER DEXTER MAN DIES IN CALIFORNIA The following item was taken from a California paper, and will be of interest to many in Dexter. Mr. Kendall, at one time, lived on Grove street across from Abbott's mill. He passed away January 7, 1942, in Oakland, Calif. Masonic services were held Friday, January 9 at Truman's Chapel, in Oakland. Mr. Kendall was a member of Penobscot Lodge, No. 39, F. & A. M. of Dexter. Alpheus Kendall, prominent Mason and retired building contractor and planing mill operator, died today --- his 93rd birthday at his home, 3045 Telegraph Avenue. Kendall was a charter member of Oakland Scottish Rite Bodies, a 32nd degree Mason and Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He also was a member of Aahmes Temple of the Shrine, the Elks, the Union League Club of San Francisco, the Commercial Club, the Athens Club and the Claremont County Club. Born in Maine, Kendall lived in Oakland and other parts of California for 68 years. He started a contracting business here in 1877. In 1880, he began operating a small planing mill at second and Grove Streets. Later the mill was incorporated as the Pacific Coast Lumber and Mill Company. Kendall retired from active business in 1928. Surviving him are his widow, Edna, and a nephew, Carlton Kendall.
