Obituary
JAMES F. COX NEWBURGH and DEXTER James F. Cox, 87, died unexpectedly, Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at his Newburgh home. He was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Bangor. The Thomas Hill House, now the Bangor Historical Society, was his childhood home. Mr. Cox was a 1932 graduate of Bangor High School and attended Hebron Academy for a postbaccalaureate year. Receiving his bachelors degree in economics from Bowdoin College in 1937, he earned his law degree from Columbia University, in 1940 and briefly practiced law in Dexter before joining the U.S. Army and seeing action in Germany and France during World War II. Following the war, he attended Harvard University, then returned to his law practice in Dexter. He served one term as a representative in the Maine legislature. He was a municipal judge for the Dexter area and was recognized by his peers as having an exceptional legal mind. He retired from his private practice and was the corporate lawyer for Dexter Shoe Co. An erudite world traveler, Mr. Cox chose to serve the community of Dexter, where he was deeply respected for his humility and honesty. His sharp mind, dry wit and kindness will be sadly missed. Mr. Cox was predeceased by his parents, James F. and Mary Burns Cox; his wife, Agnes Richardson Cox; and a sister, Joan Cox Eyerer. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Connie Cox of Milton, Mass.; a sister, Barbara C. Van Italie of Old Saybrook, Conn.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Evan and Joan Cox of Bangor; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and two dear friends, Virginia Mullison of Guilford and Judge Allan Woodcock of Bangor. Donations in his memory may be made to the Abbott Memorial Library, Main Street Hill, Dexter, Maine 04930. Visiting hours were held Jan. 29, at the Crosby Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter. A Mass in celebration of Mr. Cox's life was held Jan. 30, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Free Street, Dexter, with the Rev. Raymond Morency officiating.
