ELWIN L. CROSBY CORINNA - Elwin Louis Crosby, 84, died October 5, 1991, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. He was born July 24, 1907, at Bridgton, the son of Louis and Lurana (Libby) Crosby. He was a graduate of New England Institute of Boston, MA, Class of 1937. He established the Crosby Funeral Home in Dexter that same year. He also operated a bottled gas business in Dexter for a number of years, as well as a contracting firm, which built school houses in Cambridge, Orland and Charleston, the Grange Block in Dexter, a number of apartment houses in Dexter, and a residential area in Hartland, which now bears his name. He owned and operated the Western Auto stores in Dexter and Corinna for many years. He also purchased funeral homes in Corinna, Guilford, and Newport which continue to be operated by the family. In 1980, he was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Grace. He married Bertha Ramsey of Newport and they moved to Corinna. He was a 60-year member of the First Baptist Church of Dexter, and was very active in area church programs, including the establishment of the American Baptist Conference Center at China Lake. In recent years, he attended Morse's Corner Baptist Church in Corinna. He was a member of the Dexter Grange, Plymouth Lodge, IOOF, and the Senior Citizens Clubs of Corinna and Newport. He was a past president of the Maine Funeral Directors Association, and was a trustee of the Riverside Cemetery in Newport for more than 10 years. In addition to his wife of Corinna, he is survived by one son, Alton B. of Dexter; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Durost of Ocala, FL, and Mrs. A. Maurice (Corrine) Neal of Dexter; one brother, Spencer of Pensacola, FL and Dexter; one sister, Mrs. Lawrence (Laura) Hartt of Bangor; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours were held October 8 at Crosby Funeral Home, Corinna, where funeral services will be held October 9 at 2 p.m., with the Reverends John Dunn Jr. and Judson Stone officiating. Interment will be in the family lot, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
