Obituary	MAXINE B. HUGHES DEXTER - Maxine B. Hughes, 78, died September 26, 1996 at a Dexter nursing home after a brief illness. She was born April 21, 1918 at Willimantic, the daughter of Vance and Nellie (McKenney) Leighton. She graduated from Monson Academy, Class of 1936. Prior to her retirement she had been employed at Dexter Shoe Company, the Ethel Walker School for Girls and Sage Allen Department Store, both in Connecticut and also at Sew 'n Sew in Dexter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dexter, the Elizabeth Towle Mission, the Dexter Literary Club, Dexter Historical Society, and the Genealogical Society of Maine. Known as "the Rose Lady" through her work with the Sunshine Club, Maxine also sang in the Dexter Community Chorus, the church choir and with Singsperation. She is survived by one son, Barry Hughes of Dexter; two daughters, Sherry Harrington of Abbot, and Loanne Spaulding of Searsport; one brother Reginald Leighton of Spring Hill, FL; two sisters, June Ellis of Brooksville, FL and Zena Davis of Sierra Vista, AZ; seven grandchildren, Tiffany Dickinson, Roderick Smith, Abraham Harrington, Mithcell and Andrew Spaulding, Joshua and Megan Hughes; three great grandchildren, Brendan and Sierra Dickinson, and Jacob Leighton Smith. A service of remembrance was held October 3 at the First Baptist Church of Dexter with Rev. John Ross officiating. Private committal services were held at Riverside Cemetery, Willimantic.
