Obituary
Mabel E. Howard was born in Dexter the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Howard. The Howard family was another which believed in education. All their five children attended Dexter High school and are numbered its alumnus. The family home was at Spooner's Mills on a farm and the children attended the Spooner's Mills school. Even then Mabel seemed to be looking forward to the career of a teacher. She was graduated from Dexter High in the class of 1889. In 1890 she taught in District No. 4 for two terms. In the next few years she would teach for a term or two and then study and train at Farmington Normal school. Her efforts did not receive very high praise at first but she kept right on. In 1899 we find her in charge of the school in District No. 5 for three terms. Mabel was making good. For the next three years she was in charge of the school in District No.10, a training school for many of our best teachers. In 1903 we find her installed in the Cedar Street Primary school where she stayed for thirty-four consecutive years, and then retired having reached the age for retirement. Her last years were spent in Bangor with her sister, Mrs. Percival. Here she died June 6, 1943. She is buried in the family lot at Mount Pleasant. From an obituary notice:--Miss Howard taught in the Dexter schools more than forty years and had a very wide circle of friends. She was a charter member of the D. A. R. of Dexter, past matron of the Dexter 0. E. S. and a member of the Christian church of Bangor."
