Obituary
KENNETH W. BRAWN DEXTER - Kenneth W. Brawn, 88, a lifelong resident of Dexter, died July 14, 2000 at Dexter Healthcare after a short illness. Ken was born September 30, 1911, the youngest son of Walter and Mabel (Towle) Brawn. He graduated from Dexter High School, Class of 1928. Born to a pioneer family, Ken was a true Maine woodsman. He started trapping when he was 10, and as an adult, (quotes are from DEXTER: SPIRIT OF AN AGE, VOL. II) "he hunted and trapped extensively, both near home and up north." He used to be able to call deer and bear right out of the woods, and "always felt a special kinship with his ancestor, the legendary trapper Peter Brawn", who was said to have opened the trapping lines to the State of Maine, after marrying a Native American woman. A hardworking man of many talents, he was a feisty boxer, picked potatoes, and worked in a canning factory. When not in the woods, which he loved best of all, he earned a living as a carpenter and builder as far away as Florida, where , during the depression, "he helped construct a $30,000 boathouse for millionaire Harry Flagler", as well as constructing and renovating homes all around the town of Dexter. He is survived by 2 daughters, Melanie Brawn Mineo of Westhampton, NY, and Trina Pulkinnen of Patten; a son, Tony Lane of Boca Raton, FL (all formerly of Dexter); 3 grandsons, Zenon Pax Mineo of Westhampton, NY, Garth and Shane Pulkinnen, both of Texas; as well as loving nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and dear friends in the Dexter area. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine (Shaw) Brawn; his brother, Andrew, sister Marie, and nephew Sonny. At his request there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service was held July 20 at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dexter Historical Society, P.O. Box 481, Dexter 04930.
