Obituary	Samuel Adams Winslow, son of Eli Winslow and Polly (Adams) Winslow was born November 12, 1826 in New Gloucester, Maine. In 1829 the Winslow family moved to Dexter where they lived for several years in a small house that was built on the bank of the canal on land that is now occupied by the Call Studio building. In 1834 Eli Winslow bought land on the top of Main Street Hill, where they lived for several years, and Samuel and his older sister, Susannah attended a school which was on the Garland road. As he grew to manhood Samuel Winslow developed a fine mind, reading good books and keeping abreast of world affairs and local happenings. He possesed a retentive memory, and as long as he lived he could relate many interesting items of local histroy which he had witnessed in his younger days. He became a house painter and decorator, and his work in this line was characterized by fine precision and honest values. He always used the best material obtainable. In the days of ornate display he decorated many homes, churches and lodge rooms with his artistic fresco work. In 1854 he married Sarah Parker Lane of Ripley and they lived for about ten years on Mill Street where three children, Waldo, Stanley and Mary were born. In 1864 they moved to the farm on the North side of the Ripley Road that Eli Winslow had purchased on which he had erected a fine set of buildings the house being large enough for two families. Two more children, Kate and Annie, were born here. This farm consisted of about 160 acres, conprising the farm at the top of Winslow Hill occupied by Horace W. Hopkins and all the land beyond on the north side of the road to the Mower place, then so-called, now occupied by George S. Eddy. In a few years Eli Winslow sold half of his farm. In 1868 Samuel F. Marble bought the Winslow farm and Samuel Winslow bought a piece of land on the opposite side of the road and built the house which has been the Winslow home ever since. Two more children, John and Sadie were born here. Samuel Winslow was always interested in national politics and voted the Republican ticket. Local affairs also were of great interest to him and he never failed to attend town meetings. He had a complete collection of Town Reports, which have been bound in two volumes and presented to the Abbott Memorial Library. Owing to a lameness from an injury when about three years of age, he was unable to enter military service. He was a Universalist. He passed away at his home on December 2, 1905.
