Obituary	FLORENCE ARLINE (BROWNE) LEIGHTON DEXTER - Florence B. Leighton, 92, wife of the late Clifford F. "Jim" Leighton, died August 23, 2000 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born August 22, 1908, at Dexter the daughter of Charles Leslie and Jennie Augusta (Kenney) Browne. She attended schools at Dexter and Philadelphia, PA and also two semesters at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. She was married at Elkton, MD on January 26, 1929. In September 1931, she and her husband returned to Dexter. She worked at the town office in Dexter from 1932 to July 1942 as bookkeeper and deputy town clerk. One July 5, 1942 she went to work at the Fay-Scott Corp until August 24, 1973, retiring as foreign sales manager. In June 1976, she started in as site manager for the Eastern Agency on Aging, managing the Meals for ME program in Dexter until 1994. Also, from 1974 to 1994, she was supervisor of volunteers for the Retired Seniors Volunteer program. Florence was a faithful communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, acting as treasurer for 25 years and president of the Women's Guild for 22 years. She had been the last living member of the original Episcopal Church of the Messiah on Spring Street in Dexter. She was president of the Dexter High School Alumni Association in 1978. Her faithful fraternal orders were as follows: Past Grand Chief and Past Supreme Representative of the Order of Pythian Sisters; Past Chief holding various offices in Chiquita Temple No.9 of Abbot Village; Past President of the Past Chiefs Association and member of the Pythian Home Association. As a Rebekah and member of the Martha Washington Rebekah Lodge No. 18, she was Past Noble Grand, District Deputy President and member of the Past Noble Grands Club of Cleora Rebekahs of Corinna. She had the high honor of receiving the Decoration of Chivalry. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Cleora Rebekah Lodge of Corinna due to the consolidation of the two lodges. She was a member of the Mayflower Society of Maine and the Priscilla Mullins Alden Colony of Bangor. Her grandfather, eight times removed, came to this country on the Mayflower from England. She was a member of the South Sangerville Grange No. 335, a former member of the Dexter Literary Club, and past president of the Golden Age Club. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Dexter Public Health Association and the Dexter Historical Society. She is survived by a sister Ruth B. Street of Princess Anne, MD; also several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Nathalie B. Nuite and Phyllis B. Brennamen. She will be lovingly remembered by the children in her life, especially Jacquelyn McKenney and her sister, Marilyn Halle, as well as many dear friends, including Judy Merck. Friends may call 1 - 5 p.m. Saturday, August 26th at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. A Requiem Mass will be held 2 P.M. Sunday, August 27th, at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Dover-Foxcroft with the Revs. Kevin Holsapple and Janet McAuley co-officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter.
