CLARENCE CURTIS BATES DEXTER - Clarence C. Bates, 83, died December 27, 1992, at his home on the Silvers Mills Road in Dexter after a long illness. He was born May 8, 1909, in Sangerville, the son of Justin and Grace (Ordway) Bates. He graduated from N.H. Fay High School, Class of 1928, and then attended the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn. He was self-employed for many years and then retired as a millwright from the Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mildred (Carle) Bates of Dexter; four sons, Laurence Bates of Dexter, Keith Bates of Chester, MD, Rodney Bates of Ashland, NH, and Gary Bates of Corinna; five daughters, Margaret McKenney of Dexter, Eleanor Pratt of Sangerville, Sylvia Larry of Newport, Beverly Potter of Wentworth, NH, and Bonnie Breigan of Skowhegan; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Laurence Bates. Funeral services were held at Crosby and Neal Funeral Home December 30, with the Rev. Harold Wheeler officiating. Spring burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick 04011.
