Mrs. Mary E. Sawyer, 70, a former school teacher and native of this town, died early Tuesday morning at a local hospital following a long illness. She was born in 1876, the daughter of E. Mrs. Sawyer first started teaching when the town was divided into districs, and she taught in district No. 5. She had also held a similar position in Cambridge. During her married life Mrs. Sawyer gave up her duties, but following her husband's death, she returned to her profession and continued until her retirement in 1939 at which she was on the staff at the Pleasant Street school. She is survived by a brother, Charles Eaton of Brooksville, Mass., several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock; the Rev. Gilman Lane officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Honary bearers are Fred Jewett, Mark Roberts, Walter Rowe, and Eugene Swanton. The active bearers will be Clarence Pierce, A. Q. Thompson, Rufus Tillson, and George Safford.
