Obituary
Edward Chase, 72, died Saturday, August 31 at his home on Cedar street after a long illness. He was born in Dexter, November 16, 1874. In 1911 he married Myrtie Wyman. During his life, Mr. Chase owned several woolen mills throughout New England. He was always prominent and very much interested in the civic affairs of this town. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edward Chase; a son, Clifton Chase of Dexter; a daughter, Mrs. C. K. Genge of Wakefield, Mass., a sister, Mrs. L. B. Waldron of Dexter; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Another daughter, Charlotte, died at age of 13. Funeral services were held at the First Universalist Church of Dexter, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Gordon Chilson Reardon officiated. Interment was in Clinton. Edward Chase died Saturday, August 31st at his home on Cedar Street after a long illness. He was the son of Edward H. Chase and Charlotte Shaw Chase. His early education was in the schools of Dexter and in Lewiston Latin School. At the age of twenty one he became tax collector of Dexter, and was very successful during his three year term. At this time he read law in the offices of L. B. Waldron and C. L. Tanner. In 1900 he purchased the Tannery Mill which he operated for a time. After selling it he went to Waterville and in company with his Uncle Frank Chase operated mills in Waterville and Readfield, Me. Seven years later he sold his interest in these mills and went to Winslow, Me, and conducted the Winslow Mfg. Co., and established the Vassalboro Light and Power Co. He remained there for fourteen years. In 1924 he sold his Winslow business and went to Clinton where he built and operated the Clinton Woolen Mill for seven years, when he returned to his native town and again purchased the Tannery and the White, Mill and carried on the business until ill health forced him to retire. January 1, 1911 be married Myrtle B. Wyman of Benton, Me. Three children were born of this union, Charlotte who died at the age of thirteen, Anita the wife of C. K. Genge of Wakefield, Mass., and Clifton of Dexter. There are three grand children; Clifton and Clarence Genge and Charlotte Chase. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. L. B. Waldron and several nieces and nephews. Where ever he was located he was always interested in the civic life of the community. He was a Universalist in his religious beliefs. Funeral services were held at the First Universalist Church at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Gordon Chilson Reardon officiating. The bearers were Charles H. Ansell, Charles Brewster, Harry A. Blake, Adrian Robinson, Lester Murray and C. K. Genge. Interment was in Clinton where a commital service was conducted by Rev. Hannah J. Powell of Waterville, a cousin of the deceased. (The Eastern Gazette 9-12-1946, p.5)
