MRS.RUTH (SHEPHERD) SLATER DEXTER - Mrs. Ruth (Shepherd) Slater, daughter of Luman C. and Grace (Cushman) Shepherd; wife of the late Wilfred E. Slater, was born in Dexter. After graduating from Dexter High School, she received an AB degree from the University of Maine, where she was president of Phi Mu Sorority and elected to Phi Kappa Phi. She did graduate work at the University of Maine, the Colby Summer School of Languages, and traveled in Europe. While teaching French at Dexter High School for many years, she served as president of the Dexter Teacher's Club, the Maine Chapter of Deans of Girls, was a delegate to the representative assembly of the Maine Teacher's Association, and was several times chairman of the State of Maine Teachers of French. She coached prize speaking, directed one-act plays, and was an advisor to the French Club and the Dexter Chapter of the National Honor Society. In 1962, she left Dexter High School to teach one year in Bangor High School and five years at Brewer High School, where she was advisor to the Student Council. Mrs. Slater was a member of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, the Boneka Club, the Mayflower Descendants. She is survived by two cousins, Miriam Gilbert of Farmington and Grace Poulin of Ellsworth. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Muriel Worden of Dexter. Funeral Services were held at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter. Spring burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
