Obituary
IRVING F. CHASE DEXTER - Irving Frederick Chase, 72, died unexpectedly July 23, 1988 at his residence. He was born January 20, 1916, at Plymouth, the son of Fred and Avis (Hersey) Chase. He graduated from Newport High SchooL Class of 1934. On September 1, 1939, he married Ellen Kimball. On November 20, 1942 he completed Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, where he was battalion intelligence officer with the 96th infantry division. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for Meritorious Achievement on Okinawa Island in April 1945. Upon separation from the regular Army in late 1945, he served as commanding officer of Headquarters Company, 103rd Infantry, Maine National Guard in Newport. From 1949 to 1957 he operated a dairy farm in Dixmont. He then worked for a number of years as manager of Bud's Shop 'n Save Supermarket in Dexter. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening, oil painting and traveling. He is survived by his wife of Dexter; one sister, Mary (Chase) Stackpole of Plymouth; two sons, Steven of Newport and Ronald of Durharn; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Crosby Funeral Home in Newport with the Rev. William Stone of the Calvary Baptist Church of Newport officiating. Friends called Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
