HAROLD J. TUREK GARLAND - Harold J. Turek, 68, died July 8, 1988, at his Garland residence after a long illness. He was born June 8, 1920, at New York City, the son of Frank and Helen (Simecek) Turek. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Class of 1939. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater, and later in the Army of Occupation of Berlin. He was a master sergeant of a special unit of paratrooper- engineer- demolition experts attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. On Sept. 6, 1958, he married the former Florence Rideout. For 15 years he was program director of Ellis Memorial Settlement House, Boston, Mass., and director of Camp Guild of Hancock, N.H. In 1973, he moved with his family to Dexter, where he and his wife owned and operated The Friendly Spa Luncheonette, retiring in 1982. He was active in the BoyScouts Troop 401 in Medford, Mass. He was an active member of the Medford Unitarian Universalist Church, serving as director of religious education. He was a member of the Garland Historical Society, and a former member of the Dexter Development Association. He is survived by his wife of Garland; three sons, Daniel E. of Dexter, Frank R. of Portland and Matthew G. of the U.S. Navy; two daughters, Debra-Jean Matola, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Marietta Turek of Garland; one brother, Frank of Stonington, Conn.; five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara, in 1958. He will also be remembered by all of his adopted families. Friends called July 12 at the Crosby Funeral Home, Dexter where memorial services were scheduled for 1 p.m. on July 13.
