Obituary	I. VETH HOPE DEXTER - I. Veth Hope, 91, died February 4, 1988, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home after a long illness. She was born June 17, 1896, the daughter of Judge Arthur Stone and Elzora (Gosselyn) Stone. She attended Dexter schools and was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Previous to marrying Eric Hope, she taught school in Massachusetts, Connecticut as well as working in the education field in New Jersey. She returned to Dexter in 1950, where she directed many plays. Veth was active in the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Dexter, serving the church 26 years as church clerk, and at the time of her death, was its oldest member. Veth had held the office of regent and assistant treasurer of the Rebekah Weston Chapter DAR. She was a charter member of the Dexter Historical Society. Mrs. Hope had welcomed many newcomers to Dexter on behalf of the Dexter Development Association. She was a member of the Martha Washington Rebekah Lodge. Mrs. Hope was Red Cross representative in Dexter for 25 years and served on the Red Cross Board in Bangor. She was twice president of the Dexter Women's Literary Club and at one time wrote and directed a skit about its 1880 organization. She was a Gold Star Mother. In 1981, Mrs. Hope was named MFWC Outstanding Volunteer Club Woman of Maine. From 1978 to 1980, she was honored by the Dexter Knights of Columbus, the Dexter Grange, as well as the Dexter Development Association for her outstanding community work. She was past president of AAUW. She more recently organized and attended her 60th class reunion at Mount Holyoke. She was employed as receptionist and bookkeeper at The Eastern Gazette for 25 years. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Heeremans of Massachusetts; three granddaughters, Cynthia Greer and Rebecca and Susan Heeremans, all of Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric and a son, Gordon. Funeral services were held Sunday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Dexter with the Rev. Priscilla M. Traunstein of Pittsfield, officiating. Spring interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
