JOHN WILLIS HAINES 1856 - 1935 John Willis Haines was born in Dexter, Maine, April 7, 1856, the son of John F. and Pamela (Additon) Haines, and always made his home in this town. He was educated in the town schools and then entered into the business life of the town and for fifty years he was prominent in the affairs of Dexter. In 1880 Mr. Haines went into partnership with Stanford M. Leighton in the old Dexter House Block where they dealt in groceries and crockery, under the firm name of Leighton and Haines. In 1898 Mr. Leighton withdrew from the firm and Mr. Haines became sole owner. Mr. Haines was Agent for the American Express Company for thirty-nine years and held the Office of Town Clerk for thirty consecutive years. He had been Town Treasurer and Tax Collector. He was a past noble grand of the Plymouth Lodge, I. 0. 0. F. and long a member of the Dexter Club. In 1880 he married Mary Augusta Roberts and their Golden Wedding was an event of January 14, 1930, in the same house in which they were married, it being the old Roberts home, and where, Mr. and Mrs. Haines had passed their married life, except for a few years when they had gone to the old Haines home on Mill street to care for Mr. Haines' mother after the death of his father. Mr. and Mrs. Haines had three children, Willis Nathan, Frank Warren and Maybelle. Mr. Haines died at the home of his son, Frank, on Park Street, March 31, 1935.
