RUSSELL GEROULD DEXTER - Russell Gerould, 84, died April 11, 1985 at his Pleasant Street residence in Dexter. He was born August 6, 1900, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of Charles and Florence (Russell) Gerould. He graduated from high school and Latin school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University. He was employed as a cub reporter for the Boston Herald, covering news in Washington, D.C., and New York City. In the early 1930's he was press agent for Governor Leverett Saltonstall of Massachusetts. He served on the Cambridge City Council. He moved to Dexter in 1948 and was publisher and owner of the Eastern Gazette and one year later founded the Moosehead Gazette. Russ served as president of the Maine Press Association for two years and was a member of the New England Press Association. He had been an active member of the Dexter Development Association, served on the Board of Directors of the First Universalist Church and was a past member of the Dexter Club. His talents included painting, music and short story writing. In earlier years he enjoyed playing squash and tennis. He met his present wife, Emmi (Koester) Gerould on a skiing trip. He is survived by his wife of Dexter; one son, Russell Gerould of New York, New York; one daughter, Joanne Simpson of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Marjorie Greeley of Knoxville, Tennessee; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There were no visiting hours. Funeral services were held Monday at the First Universalist Church, with the Reverend Richard Beal officiating. Interment will be in Massachusetts at a later date. Arrangements were made by Crosby Funeral Home, Dexter.
