HERBERT C. GATES BATAVIA, N.Y. - Herbert C. Gates, who had managed textile mills for most of his working life, died April 12 in the Veterans Hospital, Batavia, New York, after a brief illness. He was born in Lincoln and spent his childhood in Dexter. He attended Boston College and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917. He fought in most of the major campaigns in France and returned to Massachusetts in 1919, to work in the textile industry. He managed textile mills in Massachusetts, Vermont, Georgia and Ontario, Canada before going to Perry, New York, to serve as the last manager of the Perry Knitting Company. He was active in Rotary International most of his life and the Service Corps of Retired Executives after his retirement. He was married to the former Frances McCullough who now resides in Bennington, Vermont. He was residing at 27 Lake St., in Perry, New York, when he died. He is survived by a brother, Bernard M. Gates of South Miami, Florida; four children; Chisholm Gates of Marlboro, Mass.; Steven M. Gates of Perry, New York; John E. Gates of Sarnia, Ontario; and Tina M. Hubbard of Largo, Florida; and six grandchildren. He will be interred in the Gates family plot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, May 10. Local arrangements are by Crosby Funeral Home.
