HUGO S. CROSS GUILFORD - Hugo S. "Taxi" Cross, 83, died February 16 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. He was born September 7, 1896 at Sebec, the son of Harvey and Florence Cross. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1915 and from the University of maine in 1919; a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity; he served in the Navy during WW I; past commander and charter member of the Guilford American Legion Post No. 119; during WW II he was the head of the commissary at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, later was superintendent of the commissary for Bowdoin College; he served as commissary cost accountant at Presque Isle Air Base and was superintendent of the commissary for the Great Northern Paper Company during the building of the Ripogenous Dam; also owned and operated H. Douglas and Company in Guilford from 1921-43. He was a member of the Guilford Methodist Church; a 60-year member of th Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge in Guilford. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Snow) Cross of Guilford; three sons, Francis J. of Auburn, Hugo H. of Westport, Conn. and Ruel P. of Dover-Foxcroft, one daughter, Florence Underwood of Estes Park, Colo.; one brother, Donald H. of Dexter. Funeral services were Feb. 19 at the Neal Funeral Home, Guilford with the Rev. John Grenfell officiating. Spring burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in the Guilford. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Methodist Church Building Fund.
