Obituary
Alton Stillings Alton Stillings, 88, died Friday, November 16, after a brief illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Crowell, Maple street, with whom he has lived since the death of his wife in 1931. He was born April 5, 1857, in Ripley the son of Rogers and Susan Lane Stillings. When he was five years old the family moved to Garland. When a young man he went to the territory of South Dakota. He carried on his trade as blacksmith on the Sioux Indian Reservation where he learned the Sioux language and many of the customs. May 1st, 1881 he married Anna Kortan at Yankton, South Dakota and shortly after returned with his wife to West Garland where they lived until a short time before her death. He was a member of Pacific lodge, F. and A. M. of Exeter for sixty years and had been presented with the Veterans' jewel of which he was very proud. His Masonic work has meant much to him during these years. Mr. Stillings was a member of the Three Quarter Century club and holder of the gold headed cane for the town of Garland. He had been very active until his last illness. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Beulah Crowell of Dexter, one granddaughter, Mrs. Althea Williams of Bangor, one nephew, and two nieces also several cousins. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, November 18, in the First Universalist church with Masonic service. Burial was in the family lot in West Garland cemetery and the bearers were Roy Packard, Vernon Packard, Fred Marsh, Fred Chandler, Eugene Swanton and Charles Millette.
