Obituary	DEXTER COUPLE KILLED IN FIRE DEXTER - A Silvers Mills couple died early Saturday morning when flames thought caused by an overheated wood stove swept through their two-and-a-half story home on the Silvers Mills Rd. Charles Grant, 84, and his wife, Gladys, 82, died of asphyxiation in the fire, discovered about 1:55 a.m. by the couple's 55-year-old son Robert. Fire Chief Clarence Prescott said the son was sleeping in a first-floor bedroom and escaped the flames by leaping through a window, cutting his hands and arms. He ran in his night clothes to a nearby house to call in the alarm. Prescott theorized that the elder Grant had gone to bed in a first-floor bedroom while his wife had gone upstairs, and that he had gone upstairs after the fire broke out to help his wife. Grant's body was found on the second floor, while his wife's body was found on the first floor in a hallway. Officials believe the couple somehow by-passed each other during the fire. The home was engulfed in flames when the Dexter Fire Department arrived less than five minutes after the alarm was received. Responding with three trucks, firemen pumped water from Main Stream across a road and railroad tracks from the Grant home. The hoses were uncoupled twice to permit passage of a freight train to Dover-Foxcroft and back, but, said Prescott, there was no problem fighting the fire. The fire was brought under control after the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Grant were removed, and firemen remained on the scene until 9:30 a.m. Two fire marshalls on the scene, Bart Rollins of Dover-Foxcroft and Irvin Estey of Veazie, said the fire apparently was caused by an overheated wood stove in the kitchen area. The interior of the home was extensively damaged, but a detached two-car garage excaped the flames. Also on the scene was medical examiner Dr. Linus Stitham of Dover-Foxcroft. Gladys Grant was born in Sangerville June 24, 1895, the daughter of Forrest and Lena (Ellms) Hutchinson. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah. She was engaged in 4-H work for over 40 years. She was past president of the Maine Women's Extension Service. She was regional director of the National Homemaker's Council. She was past president of the County Extension Executive Committee. She had been active in the Pine Tree 4-H Foundation. Charles E. Grant was born May 13, 1893, in Winterport, the son of Frank and Edith (Tenny) Grant. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, and was well-known in the area as a grower of certified seed potatoes. He operated a general store and was postmaster of Silver's Mills for 43 years. He had won awards for outstanding cooperation in soil conservation. They are survived by one son, Robert, of Dexter; Mrs. Grant's sister, Doris Wiggitt of Northfield Falls, Vt.,; nephews and cousins. Funeral services were Feb. 27 at the Church of the Messiah (Episcopal) on the Silver's Mills Road in Dexter, with the Rev. Gordon Reynolds officiating. Interment will be in South Sangerville Cemetery in the spring.
