MRS. MILDRED CLEVELAND DEXTER - Mrs. Mildred Cleveland, 86, widow of Lewis R. Cleveland, died Nov. 30, 1983. She was the daughter of William and Maud (Melvin) Smith. She was born in Exeter, Jan. 25, 1897. She was educated in Exeter schools, Lawrence High School in Fairfield, and the Castine Normal School, where the Maine Maritime Academy is now located. She taught for 5 years in neighboring towns before moving to Dexter with her family in 1923. For 33 years she taught in Dexter schools, retiring in 1958. She then did substitute teaching in Dexter and Garland for 13 years. In 191958, the Dexter Town Report was dedicated to her at the end of her teaching career. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the Maine Teachers Association and the Piscataquis Retired Teachers Association, and was a Golden Sheaf member of the South Sangerville Grange, where she held the office of chaplain. She belonged to the Piscataquis Pomona Grange and the South Sangerville Extension Service of which she was chairman for 15 years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah at Silver's Mills, serving as secretary of the Episcopal Church Women for several years. She was also a former church trustee. She is survived by one son, Errol of Bangor; one granddaughter, Mrs. Steven (Cheryl) Gibbons of Glenburn; one grandson, Lewis of East Corinth; two greatgrandsons, three stepgreatgrandchildren; two cousins, one nephew. Funeral services were held Friday at the Crosby Funeral Home, Dexter with Robert Mountford officiating. Interment was in the Exeter Center Cemetery.
