Obituary
William L. Davis William L. Davis, 68,a well known retired Dexter business man, died at his home on Main street, Friday morning, after a long illness. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Crosby funeral parlors, the Rev. Gordon C. Reardon officiating. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Mr. Davis was born in Dover South Mills, the son of Walter and Rosilla Davis, but has been a resident of Dexter since coming to this town when a boy of fifteen. He was owner and proprietor of the Dexter House, now the Sterling Hotel, for many years and also operated a hotel in Newport for a time. He was in the furniture business on Main street for a few years before retiring in 1924 because of ill health. Mr. Davis was a great lover of all animals. He owned and raced horses for many years. For the past twenty years he held the office of Maine State Humane officer and for more than 24 years he was dog tax collector for the town of Dexter, holding both these offices at the time of his death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace M. Davis; a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Gordon of Bangor; a brother, Walter E. Davis; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Barstow, of South Portland and Mrs. Viola Leathers of Vassalboro; also several nieces and nephews.
