Obituary
Sebec Native Hit on Park St. 4-Year-Old, Struck By Auto, Succumbs At EMMC A four-and-one-half year old child died Tuesday morning from injuries suffered when she was struck by a car on Park St. in Dexter, early Monday evening. Jenifer Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Smith of Sebec, died at Eastern Maine Medical Center, where she was taken by ambulance following examination at Plummer Memorial Hospital by Dr. H. Lewis Taylor. According to Dexter Police Chief Harold Knox, the Smith girl was struck at 7:00 p.m., by an automobile driven by Dwight A. Packard, 26, of Sangerville. Knox said Packard was driving slowly up Park Street with his wife when the child allegedly ran in front of the car. The accident occurred in front of the residence of the girl's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Provost, with whom the family was staying. At the scene of the accident with Chief Knox were Dexter Patrolman Linwood Green, and State Troopers David Millett of Newport and Roland Foss of East Corinth. Knox told the GAZETTE he was satisfied with his investigation, and will be taking no action against Packard unless he hears otherwise from the District Attorney's Office in Bangor. The child was born December 15, 1970, in Milo. Besides her parents, she leaves one sister, Samintha; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Provost of Dexter; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith of Sebec. She also leaves great grandparents: Mrs. Leona Crawford, Dover-Foxcroft; Mr. and Mrs. Ensley Rideout, Dexter; Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Duncan of Rosewell, New Mexico; and Mrs. Afton Duncan, Hartland. Funeral services will be held today, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. from the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. Burial will follow at the family lot in Sebec Village.
