Obituary	Henry Cowette, Drowning Victim Funeral services were held last Thursday in Skowhegan for Henry Cowette, 73, of Harmony, who drowned in Wyman Pond after he and a fishing companion fell from their small boat. According to authorities Cowette's nephew, Arthur Stewart, 42, also of Harmony, made it to shore after the 14-foot aluminum boat from which they were fishing overturned last Monday night on the small wilderness pond. Somerset County Sheriff Francis Henderson, one of several officials at the scene, said the two men were tossed into the water about 8 p.m. Monday after Cowette stood up in the open craft. According to Deputy Sheriff Donald Burns of North Anson, darkness forced Stewart to remain in the woods overnight. Burns explained. that when the boat capsized Stewart managed to climb on top of the floating craft after about five minutes. The Deputy Sherriff said Stewart then saw his uncle's arm sticking out from under the boat, grabbed it but lost his grip. Burns said Cowette had apparently drowned by that time. Stewart then began to paddle toward shore, using his hands reaching land about midnight. In the darkness he tried unsuccessfully to locate the boat landing and spent the night in the woods. Afer locating his pickup truck, Stewart drove to a brother's home in Wellington for help. Burns said Cowette's body was recovered about 75 yards off the west shore of the pond Tuesday morning, floating in about six feet of water. Somerset County Medical examiner Harland Turner said death was caused by drowning. Assisting Burns and Henderson at the scene were Wardens Donald Walker and Larry Cummings. Born in Gorham N.H., Oct 28, 1900, Mr. Cowett was the son of the late Thomas and Eugenie (Pratt) Cowette. He was married to Edith Cowette, who died several years ago. He was employed by the State Highway Department for 30 yrs. having retired several years ago. Mr. Cowette had been a Harmony resident for the past seven years and previously was a Kingsbury resident. Survivng him are two daughters, Mrs. Maxine Curty of Dexter and Mrs. Florence Ward of Bridgton; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren & one sister, Mrs. Rosie Stewart of Wellington.
