DANIEL CLUKEY KILLED IN PACIFIC AREA Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Clukey, Grove street, received the sad news, Wednesday morning of the death of their 21 year old son, Daniel Alfred Clukey, Jr., SC 3/, somewhere in Pacific. The telegram follows: "The navy department deeply regrets to inform you that your son Daniel Alfred Clukey, Ship Cook third class, U. S. N. R. was killed in action while in the service of his country. The department extends to you its sincerest sympathy in your great loss. His remains were interned in an allied cemetery on an island in the Pacific pending cessation of hostilities. If further details are received you will be informed. To prevent possible aid to our enemies, please do not divulge the name of his ship or station. Vice Adm. Randall Jacobs, Chief of Naval Personnel." Clukey had been serving on a destroyer and had been in the Pacific 21 months. He took part in the invasion of Leyte and was on the Philippines where he met greeted some of the liberated prisoners. He was the first Dexter man to be killed in the Pacific and his brother, S/Sgt. Sinclair Clukey was the first to be wounded in that area. The last letter received by Mr. and Mrs. Clukey from their son, was dated March 10 and he spoke of being beside the ship Bruce Berryman from Dexter, was on but being unable to see him. MEMORIAL MASS HELD FOR DANIEL A. CLUKEY Memorial services were held at St. Anne's Catholic church Saturday morning, June 2, at 9 o'clock for Daniel A. Clukey Petty Officer 3rd Class, who was killed in action in the Pacific and buried in an allied cemetery, according to word received by his parents May 15th. The Reverend Fathers Cornelius J. Enright, Edward Shephy of Dexter and David Surette of Old Town officiated at the mass. The American Legion and Auxiliary attended the services in a body and the stores and places of business in town were closed from 9 until 10 o'clock out of respect for the deceased. Clukey entered the service March 16, 1943 and took his boot training at Newport, R. I. After attending a Gunnery school in Norfolk, Virginia, he was assigned to a destroyer and saw service in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic. He was with the escort to the Queen Mary, when Prime Minister Churchill was aboard, en route to the Quebec Conference. Following a furlough at home he was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and participated in the battles of Saipan, Tinian, the Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima. Leyte, Luzon, Mindora and Okinawa. Particulars of battle honors have not been revealed as yet by the Navy department. Daniel A. Clukey was born in Dexter February 6, 1924 the son of Daniel and Flora Clukey, Grove street. He attended the local grade school and N. H. Fay high. He later enrolled in the N. Y. A., taking a machinst's course, and went to Springfied, Mass., where he was employed at the Stevens Arms, previous to entering the service. He is survived by his parents; seven sisters, Cecelia Clukey of Springfield, Mass., Mrs. Athalie Bascom of Providencte, R. I., Constance, Beverley, Rita, Audrey, Eileen and Crystal, at home; and five brothers, Sinclair of Washington, D. C., who was recently discharged from the army and was unable to attend the services, Hiliary, Patrick, Peter and Thomas, at home. Among those from out of town attending the memorial mass were Miss Cecelia Clukey of Springfield, Mass.; Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bascom of Providence, R. I.; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Clukey and daughter of Brewer; Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Clukey and daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Clukey and daughter, Charles, Eva, John, Christopher and Maurice Pullyard of Sangerville; Mr. and Mrs. Francis Clukey and mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Mayo and family of Old Town; Mr. and Mrs. Dosity White of Dover-Foxcroft. note: photo accompanied June 7, 1945 article Services To Be Held For Daniel A. Clukey The remains of Daniel A. Clukey SC, 3-c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel V. Clukey, Grove street, will arrive here Friday, May 20. The Dexter sailor was killed at Okinawa on board the U. S. S. Luce, May 4, 1945. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, May 21, at St. Anne's Catholic Church with full military honors. He was born in Dexter, Feb. 6, 1924, and attended local schools.
