Pvt. LLOYD BENNETT KILLED IN ACTION The next day after having received a letter from the War Department that their son, Pvt. Lloyd Bennett, had returned to duty February 6, after having been wounded on the 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Bennett received a telegram notifying them that Pvt. Bennett was killed in action in Germany February 9th. Pvt. Bennett graduated from N. H. Fay High school in June 1943 and the following week was inducted into the service. He received his training in the clerical department of the Medi-Corps at Camp Grant, Illinois and served in that capacity, after going overseas in October of the same year, about a year with General Headquarters in Oxford, England. He later drove an ambulance and several weeks ago was transferred to the Infantry, serving in Holland and Belgium before going into Germany. Pvt. Bennett was born in Dexter twenty years ago last October, the son of Everett and Alice Seavey Bennett, and has always lived here. He was a member of the Methodist church having joined at the Easter service previous to his army enlistment and memorial services will be held at the church at a later date. He was a young man of fine character and exemplary habits and leaves many friends who will be saddened by the news of his death. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, T/CpI. Sheldon Bennett of San Francisco, California, with the Topographic Engineers of the Western Defense Command and a baby brother Stephen; a sister, Constance; a grandmother, Mrs. Lilla Seavey, also several aunts and uncles. His uncle Pvt. Stephen Seavey was killed in the Invasion of Sicily and a cousin, Lt. Myron Seavey was lost in the Mediterranean when an army transport was torpedoed and sunk. note: photo accompanied article (The Eastern Gazette 3-1-1945, p.1) Funeral services for Pvt. Lloyd Stanley Bennett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Bennett, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Dexter Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Perkins, officiating. Cpl. Raymond Hartford of Dexter, now stationed at the Brooklyn N. Y. base escorted the remains to Dexter. Bearers were the following friends and classmates: Quentin Robinson, Samuel Page, Fred Sprague, John Litchfield, George Slater and Reginald Reeks. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Born on Oct. 14, 1924, Pvt. Bennett was graduated from N. H. Fay High School in 1943 and entered the service that July, going to England immediately after his basic training in the Medical Corps at Camp Gran, Ill. After completing a course as medical secretary in the 5th Hospital, he was sent to Headquarters, 17 District as secretary and ambulance driver in the medical section. He was sent to France as an ambulance driver during the Normandy invasion and following the Battle of the Bulge he was transferred to the Infantry. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Bennett of Dexter, two brothers, Sheldon of Port Oregon and Stephen and one sister, Constance, both of Dexter, and his grandmother, Mrs. Lila Seavey.
