RICHARD VERN AWALT Richard Vern Awalt, 32, formerly of Dexter, died April 4 in a motorcycle hit and run accident in California. Funeral services were held in Bellflower and burial was in Long Beach, Calif. He was born in Dexter, March 20, 1938, the son of Vern and Stata (Clukey) Awalt. He attended schools in Terryville, Conn., and served for 13 years in the Marine Corps before receiving a medical discharge. He held a Vietnam Service medal; Vietnam Campaign meda1; National Defense service medal; Good Conduct medal and Navy Unit Commendation medal, as well as the Combat Air Crew insignia. He was employed in the U.S. Post Office at North Hollywood, Calif. Survivors are his widow, Marty Awalt of Bellflower, Calif.; three sons, Mark, Terry and Barry of Killeen, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Gloria Burgoine of Winslow, Me., and Miss Patricia Syphers of Terryville, Conn.; two brothers, Robert Syphers of Terryville and John Maskaitis, also of Terryville. His parents, Mrs. Stata Maskaitis of Terryville, Conn., and Vern Awalt of East Holden, Maine, also his maternal grandmother Mrs. Nellie Clukey of Dexter.
