Services Held For Elwood Stevens Elwood A. Stevens, a resident of Dexter for many years and a well-known amateur radio operator throughout New England with the station call letters of WIBOK, died Sunday morning at the Veterans Administration Center Hospital at Togus. He was 73 years of age. A Guilford native, he was born Nov. 26, 1895, son of the late Andrew and Effie (Witham) Stevens. Stevens moved to Dexter as a small child and graduated from high school in the class of 1915. A World War I veteran, he joined the fire department upon high school graduation and remained a member 46 years until his retirement in 1961. During 20 years of that time, he served as an engineer (assistant chief). He was also a spare local police officer 35 years until retirement several years ago. He had worked at Ramsay & Gates and at the local post office. He also drove the school bus for many years. A 45-year member of Penobscot Lodge of Masons, he was a 40-year member of St. John's Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, a member of the K. of P., a charter member of Boneka Club and was associated with the Universalist Church. Surviving are his widow, Doris, an Augusta nursing home patient; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Miriam) Gilbert of Farmington; a granddaughter and two grandsons. Services were held Wednesday at Crosby Funeral Home in Dexter with the Rev. John FJ McNally Jr., officiating. Interment will be later this spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery here.
