DEXTER SOLDIER DIES IN ENGLAND Cpl. Grover C. Field Jr. died in England January 14, as the result of Diphtheria, according to word received Wednesday of this of this week by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Field, from the War Department in Washington. He was confined in an army hospital since November with the disease which proved fatal. He went to Fort Bragg, N. C. for his basic training in August 1942 and was later at Madison Barracks, N. Y. and A. F. Hill Military Reservation, Va. before going to England in December 1943. He served with an Engineering Corps in England, France, Belgium and Holland before being taken ill. Cpl. Field was born in Newport January 3, 1921 the son of Grover and Angeline Winchester Field, but came to Dexter when a small child and attended the Dexter schools. Before his enlistment he was employed by the A. W. Keyte Estate. He was united in marriage March 20, 1942 to Miss Gertrude Burton of this town. Besides his wife and parents he leaves four sisters, Mrs. Vesta Dearborn, Helen, Mary and Edith; six brothers, Walter, Floyd, Ludlow, Albion, Ernest and Elwood; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albion Winchester and Eugene Field, also several aunts and uncles. Remains on the way home to their final resting place, according to dispatches received from Army headquarters. (The Eastern Gazette 7-1-1948, p.1)
