Obituary	Edward Jumper Sturtevant Edward Jumper Sturtevant's ancestors on both sides of the family were among the early settlers of here. The son of Curtis and Abigail (Jumper) Sturtevant, he was born in Dexter, July 10, 1840, on the old Sturtevant farm on the north road to Garland, on which his grandfather, Gamaliel Sturtevant had paid taxes in 1820. His mother was the oldest child of Edward and Sally (Cordwell) Jumper and was born in Elkinstown, now Dexter, on the 26th day of May, 1818. Edward Jumper was a prominent man in town affairs and a signer of the petition for the incorporation of the town. In 1848 Curtis Sturtevant built the house on Pleasant street where the pine trees are, and moved his family from the farm. Edward Sturtevant was educated in the town schools. He enlisted in the Civil War in September 1862, and served as a privatt until June 28, 1865, when his Company "D" of the First Maine Regiment of Veteran Volunteers was "mustered out of the United States service and went immediately to Maine." Here they were paid and finally discharged July 3, 1865, and a few days later Edward arrived in Dexter. On August 12, 1865, he married Josephine W. Linnell, daughter of Ira and Elvira (Carleton) Linnell. They had two children of whom the daughter, Jennie Linnell Sturtevant survives. Edward J. Sturtevant was employed by the Maine Central Railroad for a good many years, most of the time as station agent. He always took an active interest in the Plymouth Lodge, I. 0. 0. F. and in the H. F. Safford Post, G. A. R. He served on the Board of Selectmen for fifteen years, fourteen as Chairman. It is interesting to note that but one man ever served a longer term and that man was the grandfather for whom Mr. Sturtevant was named, Edward Jumper, who served seventeen years. Mr. Sturtevant died in Dexter, April 7, 1914. Mrs. Sturtevant died two years later, April 4, 1919.
