DR. HENRY KNOX THATCHER Henry Knox Thatcher was born in Bangor, Maine, August 3, 1854, the son of George Augustus and Rebecca (Billings) Thatcher. He was a graduate of Harvard College and of Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia He was united in marriage on January 17, 1882 with Miss Annie Ross of Bangor, a daughter of the late Capt. Hugh Ross of the Ross and Howell tugboat firm. Dr. Thatcher was a practicing physician in Cambridge, Maine, for three years and it was there that the only son, Henry D. Thoreau was born on July 12, 1883. The Thatchers came to Dexter in 1885 and there after made this town their home, and here Annie R. Thatcher died January 29, 1917. The son was always called "Thoreau" and his mother put the emphasis on the last syllable He was always a favorite with his schoolmates in Dexter. Later he went to college. He married and had three children, Ross, Rebecca and Ruth. He died in 1919 at the early age of thirty-six. We quote from an obituary in the local paper. "Dr. Henry Knox Thatcher, a good doctor and a fine man of this town, passed away Saturday morning, May 18, 1929 at St. Barnabas hospital in Portland, where he had been a patient for nearly seven weeks." Dr.Thatcher had been living alone at his home on Free street and the funeral was at the home of his next door neighbor, NathanDaggett. Interment was at Mount Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. Dr Thatcher was a practicing physician in Dexter for over forty years and although he was very deaf he made a success of his profession and many of his patients, both in Dexter and surrounding towns sincerely mourned his passing.
