Obituary	HIRAM FREEMAN SAFFORD Hiram Freeman Safford was born in Dexter, Maine, September 16, 1840, the son of Hiram and Ruby (Jumper) Safford. Both his grandfather Safford and his Grandfather Jumper were among the early settlers of Elkinstown, and they were both signers of the petition for incorporation which was granted in 1816 and the town was incorporated under the name of Dexter. Hiram Freeman Safford was among the first from Dexter to volunteer when the civil war broke out and he served in the Sixth Maine as Corporal. He was the first of the Dexter Boys to pay the supreme price. He was killed in action at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, Nov. 7, 1863. The Grand Army Post of Dexter was named for him and the picture now in the Abbott Memorial Library hung for many years in the Dexter Grand Army Post Hall.
