SERVICES HELD FOR DR. SAWYER Dr. H. Stanton Sawyer, 98, Dexter's oldest male citizen and the holder of the gold headed cane died Friday morning at St. Dominic's Nursing Horne after a long period of failing health. He was born in Garland, Jan. 9, 1868, the son of Reuben and Abbie (Blackstone) Sawyer. He was married to the former Florence Edith Cole and celebrated a 60th wedding anniversary in 1958. He was a well known optometrist and maintained an office in Garland for 40 years where he lived in the old homestead where six generations of the family had lived. In 1938 he moved to Dexter where he practised actively until his 92nd year. He served two terms as state representative from the Dexter-Garland district. He was always interested in birds and published several articles and songs. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Thelma LaFrance of Lynn, Mass., two sons, Guy of Garland and Warren of Dexter; 9 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; several, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Garland Baptist Church Sunday afternoon with Frederick Marsh of the Garland church officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Garland.
