Obituary	JENNETTE S. BARTON Martha Jennette S. Barton was born in Dexter, Maine, August 22, 1857, the daughter of Artemas L. and Martha (Coolidge) Barton. She taught for many years in the Dexter schools. First in the rural districts and later in the grades in the Village. We first find mention, of Miss Barton in the school report of 1877. We quote: "Winter term in District No. 8 was taught by Miss Jennette S. Barton. The excellent discipline and good advancement observable in this school, bespeak the kindly disposition of the scholars, and judicious management of the teacher. Miss Barton has had but little experience in teaching, and we predict for her an enviable reputation as a teacher, if she continues in the avocation." In 1884 we find Miss Barton in the upper primary school and the next year in 1885 she is in the lower intermediate school. We quote from the report of this school: "A constant advance through the year under a capable and faithful teacher. With thorough consecration, she has devoted herself, heart and mind, to the good of the school. The result, solid work, and enviable success." With 1887 Miss Barton closed her work in this school and retired from the teaching force. After spending some years in Chicago with her brothers, Miss Barton returned to Dexter, bought a house on Beech street and made that her home. There she died January 29, 1935.
