RITES TODAY FOR DON CHAMPEON Funeral services were to be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Universalist Church in Dexter for Donald D. Champeon, civic leader, holder of many public offices and prominent businessman, with the Rev. Myron Klinkman of the Bangor Theological Seminary officiating. Spring burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Active Bearers: Donald W. Brown, Frederick J. Clark, Richard H. Ramsay, Elwood Sampson, Raymond C. Whitney, Jr., Harold R. Mountain, Bangor. Honorary Bearers: George A. Abbott, Jere Abbott, Henry J. Atwood, Paul D. Barstow, Clarence H. Crosby, Roger W. Claggett, Newport, N. H., Fred A. Draeseke, George D. Everett, Bangor, Lloyd H. Hatch, Sr., Dr. Howard J. LaBarge, Dr. Hans Shurman, Dr. H. Lewis Taylor, Henry S. Larsen, Richard W. Stoddard, U.S. Air Force, Fontaine bleu, France, Reynold F. Thompson, Norman F. Plouff, Fred A. Keyte. He died at the age of 61 Monday evening at the Plummer Memorial Hospital after having been stricken at his home on Dustin st. Saturday morning. Don Champeon was born at Old Town January 27, 1904, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Champeon. He attended Dexter schools, graduating from Dexter High School in 1923. He was a star basketball player and participated in track and baseball. He graduated from a school of banking in Bangor. During World War II, he attended Officers Candidate School at Miami, Fla., attaining the rank of major in the Air Corps. Previous to his discharge, he did staff work at the Pentagon in Washington, which took him on extensive assignments including service in the Phillipines. He was married at Washington to Miss Audree Hawkins of St. Louis, Mo., on Sept. 29, 1946. He was a member of the staff of the Dexter Branch of Merrill Trust Company for 25 years. For the past 18 years he had served as assistant treasurer and office manager of the Amos Abbott Company, woolen mill. He had been a member of the Board of Selectmen, chairman of the Dexter School Committee, past president of the Board of Governors and present director of the Plummer Memorial Hospital. He was past president of the Dexter Public Health Association, a member of the Dexter Finance Committee, a trustee of the Abbott Memorial Library, and was presently trustee of the Town of Dexter School District. He was a past president of the Dexter Club, member of Poulliot Seavey Post, American Legion, past master of Penobscot Masonic Lodge, member of Anah Temple of Mystic Shrine and other Masonic orders including the York and Scottish Rites. He was a member of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, where he was chairman of the board of deacons and deaconesses and chairman of the finance committee. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, Donald D. Jr., and two sisters, Elizabeth M. and Hazel A. Champeon, all of Dexter; a nephew, Rodney D. Champeon of Dexter, and a niece, Mrs. Robert Fawley of South Carolina.
