Obituary
'JIM' STONIER DIES, PREPARING FOR BROTHER'S FUNERAL James C. Stonier, 69, former All-Maine and All-New England Football Guard who coached many Dexter athletic teams to victories, died unexpectedly Tuesday in Bar Mills while preparing to attend his brother's funeral in Gardiner. The colorful coach and instructor served the Dexter schools and Hatch Preparatory School in Newport, R.I. Beginning his coaching career in 1916, "Big Jim", as he was known by his colleagues and pupils, served on the faculty of schools at Littleton, N. H., Edward Little High of Auburn, N. H. Fay High of Dexter, Biddeford High, Wiscasset Academy and the Wassookeag Summer Camp. He was twice selected to All-Maine college football teams just after World War 1, in which he served as an artilleryman in France. He turned down an offer by All-American Jim Thorpe to join the Canton, Ohio Bulldogs, the first pro-football team in America, captained by the Indian "great". Born in Boston, he attended Boston University, U. of Maine, Tufts, Southern California and Colby. He retired in 1961 and had since made his home in Bar Mills. Survivors are his widow, Geraldine; two daughters, Mrs. Will Witten of South portland and Mrs. Francis Faherty of Rockville, Md., and a son Barry Wakefield of Newport, R. I. Attending his funeral services in Buxton this afternoon from Dexter were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd H. Hatch, Sr., and Lloyd H. Hatch, Jr.
