Mr. Richards and his family have been frequent visitors here at the home of his wife's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Hatch, and he had served as guest preacher at the First Universalist Church. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at his Lynnfield church with a close friend, the Rev. William J. Rees, pastor of the Lowell Congregational Church, officiating. He was born at Atlantic City, N. J., and, was a graduate of Boston Latin School, Huntington Preparatory School and the University of Tennessee. He received a bachelor of divinity degree from Bangor Theological Seminary and from Williams College. A college and professional football player in his youth, he worked with youth groups, alcoholics and was keenly interested in the project, Heifer, Inc, an organization which sends purebred livestock, and poultry to refugee farmers throughout the world and was serving as vice president. He had made several trips to various countries in connection with the project. He served as chaplain of the Lynnfield Fire Department and was a familiar figure at fire calls. His first pastorate was at Lanesboro and he subsequently served at the Peekskill, N.Y., Military Academy; at Saco, Me., and as pastor of the First Church, Congregational, at Lowell Mass. He accepted the pastorate of the Lynnfield church in 1959, and was one of the most active and prominent clergymen in that city. A past grand chaplain of the Massachusetts Grand Lodge of Masons, he was chaplain of the Lynnfield Lodge; secretary of the local Rotary Club; and a member of the Eastern Maine Football Officials Association. For a brief time following his graduation from college he played with the Chicago Cardinals. Besides his widow, Sybil (Weymouth) Richards, he is survived by three daughters, Sybil Ann, 15, Andrea, 10, and Rodney Lynn, 10 months; his father, the Rev. Dr. Andrew Richards, pastor of the Second Congregational Church at Dorchester, Mass., his mother; and a brother, the Rev. Craig Richards pastor of the Congregational Church at Bath, Me.
