Statesmen And Neighbors Bid Farewell To Brewster Attend Dexter Rites For Town's Most Distinguished Citizen Prominent public officials, representatives of civic organizations and friends and neighbors of former United States Senator Owen Brewster attended services which were held this (Thurs.) afternoon at the First Universalist Church in Dexter. Governor John H. Reed of Maine was among those who came to pay tribute. Senator Margaret Chase Smith hoped to arrange her schedule so that she could be present. Among Republican leaders in Gov. Reed's party were David A. Nichols of Lincolnville, state GOP chairman William F. Mussenden of Bath, chairman of the GOP's finance committee, Mrs. Ellen E. Thomas of Madison, vice-chairman of the GOP state committee. President James Stacy Coles of Bowdoin attended and John Lincoln Baxter of Topsham represented the college's Governing Boards, of which Brewster was a member for 20 years. The services were conducted by Mrs. Mildred Booth Lord of Bangor, former First Reader and former president of the Bangor Christian Science Church. A long-time friend of Senator Brewster, she is a member of the same Christian Science Association. Senator Brewster was also a member of the Christian Science Society of Newport and a member of its board of directors. Mrs. Clair Wilkins, Dexter, was the organist. Local organizations were represented by three officers from each group. Ushers: Clarence H. Crosby, chief usher. James F. Cox, B. M. Siciliano, Thomas H. Tillson, all of Dexter; Frank Fellows, of Bangor; Dorien McGraw, Milbridge; and Francis Allen, Bangor. Honorary bearers: Nathan C. Bucknam, Bert L. Call, Millard G. Otto, Clarence H. Crosby, Jere Abbott, Charles E. Dustin, all of Dexter; and Henry T. Gerrish, Dover-Foxcroft. Active bearers: Halfard Davis, Washington, D. C., Dennis Lombardi, Bangor; Harold M. Wolff, K. Stanford Blake, Delphis Higgins and Earl Fanjoy, all of Dexter. Former Senator Brewster died suddenly at the age of 73 Monday morning at the Christian Science Benevolent Association in Boston, a retreat house to which he and Mrs. Brewster had made periodic visits in the past few years. His son Charles said that the Senator's death was totally unexpected and added that his father had been slightly ill with a virus infection but that his general health appeared to be good. The cause of death has not yet been made known. Surviving are his widow, Dorothy (Foss) of Dexter; a son, Charles of Bangor; a brother, Charles S. of Dexter; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Another son, Owen, died in the 1930s while in high school. Leaders of both parties in Maine - including Gov. Reed and the state's entire congressional delegation - paid tribute to Brewster's ability and expressed sorrow at his death. State House flags, by order of the Governor, were flying at half staff until after the services. Flown at half staff also were the flag at the Dexter Post office and the flags at Bowdoin College of which Brewster was an alumnus. Most locally-owned downtown Dexter stores are closed all this afternoon for the Brewster funeral, from 2 to 5 p. m. Grocery stores, other stores off Main st., the A. & P., First National, Dexter Pharmacy, Fossa's and Toots' are closed only for the services, from 2:30 to to 3:30 p. m.
