Bearers: Harold Hatch, Marvin Salisbury, Clarence Haynes, Ralph Lowell, Cleveland Davis and Wendel Higgins. He was born in Dexter, June 18, 1894, the son of Edwin G. and Louisa Radcliff Ayer and had resided here his entire life. He was a member of the First Universalist Church. He was a member of Penobscot Lodge, No. 39, F. & A. M, St. John's Chapter No. 25, St. John's Commandery, of Bangor, Maine, a charter member of Anah Temple and also a life member of Anah Temple; formerly a member of Kora Temple, Lewiston, Maine, and a member of the Tri-County Shrine Club. He was a veteran of World War I, in Headquarters Troop, 12th Division, where he served in the Postal Unit at Fort Devens, Mass. He is survived by his wife, Helen R. Ayer, a daughter, Mrs. Court P. Bentley, two grandchildren, Karen Ayer and Calvin P. Bentley, of Detroit, Michigan, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Glen C. Ayer, assistant postmaster for 10 years, completed his duties in the Postal Service at the end of 1950 after 37 years and one month in the service. Mr. Ayer began his career in the service Dec. 1, 1913, under the postmastership of the late Freeman D. Dearth, as a substitute clerk, receiving appointment as a regular clerk in the early days of World War I. He was also a veteran of World War I, serving in the 12th Division, at Division Headquarters, as a member of the 12th Division Postal unit, but did not see foreign service, as the Armistice was signed as the division was waiting sailing orders. He began his career when the post office was located in the store now occupied by the Dexter Pharmacy, later moving to what is now the Koritsky block then to the building now occupied by the United Stores. From this location the post office was moved to its quarters in the new post office building. It was here that he was appointed assistant postmaster by Joseph M. Mountain, former postmaster, Dec. 1, 1940. Nov. 1, 1948, Mr. Ayer was made acting postmaster following the retirement of Mr. Mountain, serving until the appointment of the present postmaster, Roger T. Gilbert, then returning to his former position as assistant.
