Obituary	MRS. SAMANTHA PERKINS CROSBY 1938 - 1922 Samantha Perkins was born in Ripley, Maine, October 9, 1838, the daughter of Joseph H. and Mary Perkins. The Perkins family were residents of school district number ten in Dexter for a number of years. In 1851 Samantha Perkins was a pupil in Dexter High School and in 1858 she taught the summer term of this same school. She married John B. Wilson who was the teacher of Dexter High in the winters of 1856-57 and 1857-8. Mr. Wilson became a physician. He served as surgeon in the Civil war and died March 15, 1866, aged thirty-two years as a result of the hardships of war. They had one son, Charles B. Wilson, who at one time was teacher of sciences at the Normal school at Westfield, Mass. Later Mrs. Wilson married Dr. Atwood Crosby of Waterville. Mrs. Crosby died in Augusta, Maine, in January, 1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John F. Nelson, after a long illness. As a young woman she was a teacher of Latin in Coburn Classical Institute under Principal Hanson. In later life she taught for many years in the public schools of Waterville. She was a natural teacher, sympathetic and inspiring. Many men and women remember her today as a guiding influence in their lives. A woman of unusual intellectual attainments she retained her keeness of mind to the last, and, through all the sufferings of her last few years remained a close friend and companion of her grandchildren. Mrs. Crosby was possessed of literary ability publishing prose and verse under the nom-de-plume of Jean Wilson. She was a woman of high ideals and lovely character. She faced many troubles bravely and with a cheerful heart. She was faithful to every duty and no sacrifice was too great for her to make for those she loved; nor were her interests bounded by her own family circle. She lived a long and useful life and has left cherished memory to those who knew her.
