Obituary
Peter S. Plouff, Business, Civic Leader, Dies Aged 91 Peter S. Plouff, 91, long identified with the manufacturing and civic activities in Dexter, died in his sleep Wednesday night at his home on Free st. He is survived by an only son, Norman Fay Plouff of Dexter; and two nieces, Mrs. Charles Oliver and Mrs. Louis Robichaud, both of St. Petersburg, Fla. Funeral services will be held at his residence, 39 Free st., Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. Howard E. Benson of Kittery former minister of the Dexter Methodist Church will officiate. The remains will be entombed to await burial this spring at Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. Mr. Plouff was born at Webster, Mass., Jan. 11, 1869, son of Louis and Ada (Langevin) Plouff. During his early life he was employed in the woolen business, later graduating from The Textile School in Philadelphia. In 1899, he was overseer in the weave room at the Amos Abbott Mill in Dexter. In 1901 he was united in marriage to the late Marion E. Fay and they remained in Dexter until 1903, when they moved to Sabattus. In 1912, they returned to Dexter to make their permanent residence. He later acquired the Wassookeag Woolen Company, now the site of the Dexter Shoe Company. Although it meant breaking contact with many of his close associates in the woolen industry, he began new duties in 1916 with the Fay and Scott Company, serving on the Board of Directors. In 1919, he was elected vice-president, and in 1943 became president of the company. More recently, he and his son, Norman, have been associated in the Fay and Scott Company with offices on Main st. Until recent years, Mr. Plouff remained an active interest in civil and public affairs. He served as representative from this district in the state Legislature from 1930 to 1934, and in March 1931 was elected for a four-year term on the local board of selectmen. Mr. Plouff was a Mason, holding membership in the Webster Blue Lodge, Webster, Mass. and St. Johns Commandery, Skowhegan. He was a life member of Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor, being one of the charter members; and had previously belonged to Kora Temple of Lewiston. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, when it was active locally; the Dexter Club and the Newcomen Society of England, and a former member of the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Plouff was accorded much credit for his sympathetic work in connection with the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children at Springfield, Mass. During World War I he served as chairman of the local Red Cross unit. note: photo accompanies article
