Obituary
Services Held For Mary Hamilton Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the First Universalist Church, Dexter, for Miss Mary Hamilton, 96, who died Sunday at the Plummer Hospital where she had been a patient for several weeks. The Rev. Richard J. Norsworthy officiated. The remains were entombed at the funeral home and burial will take place this spring in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Bearers were: Clyde Mower, E. Carl Crocker, Charles Coy and Thomas Tillson. Miss Hamilton, whose death followed that of her sister, the late Abbie Hamilton, by a little more than two weeks, was born in St. Anthony, Minn., now a part of Minneapolis, Aug. 11, 1862, daughter of Samuel and Hattie (Sturtevant) Hamilton. She came to Dexter with her parents in 1865 and has since made her home here. A graduate of Dexter High School in the Class of 1882, the first ever graduated from D. H. S., she then attended Farmington Normal School prior to teaching for a time in the rural districts. For many years she was employed as a bookkeeper at the Dexter Savings Bank, First National Bank, Dexter Building and Loan Association and in the office of Tillson and Drew's hardware store. Considered an authority on local history, she collaborated with the late Mrs. Annie Murphy in writing a local history column for The Eastern Gazette from 1930 to 1943. Much of this information is in scrapbooks belonging to the Abbott Memorial Library, which the late Miss Abbie Hamilton started to compile in 1930. A member of the First Universalist Church, in her younger years she served as president and secretary of the Youth Group and as secretary of a State Young Peoples' group. She served the Church School for years as teacher and secretary; the church as clerk, treasurer and deaconess and at the time of her death was treasurer emeritus. In 1947, a stained glass window in the primary room of the Church School was dedicated to Miss Mary and Miss Abbie Hamilton "in deep appreciation for loyal and devoted service to the church for over half a century." Miss Hamilton is survived by four cousins, Mrs. Harry Tibbetts of Vanceboro, Mrs. Alice Blaisdell, of Old Orchard, Mrs. Gladys Smith of Wells and Theron Sturtevant, Bucksport. Among the relatives in town Wednesday for the funeral of Miss Mary Hamilton were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tibbetts of Vanceboro; Miss Margaret Tibbetts, R. N., of Waverly, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Tibbetts, Kittery; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Tibbetts, Stetson; Mr. and Mrs. Theron Sturtevant, Bucksport.
