Abbie Hamilton Dies, Aged 91; Services Saturday Miss Abbie H. Hamilton, 91, retired Dexter librarian, died early this (Thursday) morning at the Cushman Convalescent Home in Dexter after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at the First Universalist Church of Dexter Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard J. Norsworthy officiating. The remains will be entombed at the Crosby Funeral Home and burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. until the time of the funeral. Miss Hamilton was born in Dexter Nov. 23, 1867, the daughter of Samuel and Hattie (Sturtevant) Hamilton. She attended Dexter schools. The family moved into the house, at what is now 4 Park st. in 1874 and Miss Hamilton lived there with her sister, Miss Mary Hamilton, 96, until last December, when ill health forced them to move to the Cushman home. Miss Hamilton was librarian at the Abbott Memorial Library for 30 years, retiring in April, 1956. She had worked at the library for 55 years. The Dexter town report was dedicated in her honor in 1957. A lifelong member of the Universalist Church, Miss Hamilton was also a member of the Maine and the American Library Association, and an honorary member of the Dexter Women's Literary Club. As a member of the First Universalist Church of Dexter, she was active in church affairs until the last few years, serving as deaconess, as superintendent of the cradle roll and the primary department and teaching the primary class of the Sunday school for almost 65 years. Miss Hamilton is survived by her sister, Mary, now an orthopedic patient at Plummer Memorial Hospital, and four cousins, Katherine F. Tibbetts of Vanceboro, Alice Blaisdell, Gladys Smith and Theron Sturtevant. note: photo accompanies article
